Getting projects done around your home can be a daunting task if you are not sure where to start. With over ten years in business, Myhome Handyman has put together a list of common tips which should greatly assist the budding DIY enthusiast.
Silencing a loud door when closing
Open the door and squeeze in 4 or 5 blobs of silicone along the main contact areas in the door jam. Allow to dry and set in place by keeping the door open for 3-4 hours after application. Results in a softly closing door.
Plastic Bag Holder/Dispenser
By using a simple empty tissue box you will be able to store your countless plastic bags along with accessing them easily by tacking the box to a convenient wall or door and stuffing it full of the bags.
Rather than buying a bag of tile spacers when tiling you can use pennies instead. Simply slot the pennies into the gaps when you are fixing the tiles to the wall or floor – they are easy to handle and cheaper.
Re-sealable Cardboard Boxes
When using cardboard boxes to store equipment and other items sealing them again and again may prove difficult as the boxes integrity drops with each opening and closing. If you cover each of the 4 flaps completely with duct or packaging tape, then you seal the flaps with the same tape. This will allow an easy and secure opening and closing again and again.
Storing Opened Paint
Glass jars are better for storing paint than using the original paint tin. It is difficult to get a good seal with the original tin so by apply a little duct or Teflon tape to the glass jar treads before you seal the jar and this will provide an air tight seal. It will also allow you to check the colour of the paint without opening the jar.
A good substitute for an Electronic wall stud finder
By running an electric razor across a plaster board-wall it can reveal where the wall studs are and so you will not need an electrical stud finder. By knowing where the wall studs are you can avoid cutting through them. The electric razor will change its vibration pattern as it runs over where the wall studs are and so revealing where they are hiding.
Quick Fix for Dripping Water Tap or leaking pipe
If you are having a problem when fitting a new a copper joint and you cannot stop a leaking trickle of water, simply shove a ball of bread into the pipe to stop it. This will give you time to fix it. When you notice a dripping tap simply tie a piece of string around the end of the tap which hangs into the base of the sink, the drips will now flow down the string and make no noise.
