GARDENING TIPS

garden team

Give your shovel a non-stick finish.

When gardening having mud and earth sticking to your shovel can add a lot of time and effort to a job. By spray your garden shovel or spade with a Teflon or silicone oil will help a great deal. A generous coat of this spray will effectively create a non-stick surface on the tool helping dirt and mud to slip right off.

Are your garden pots too heavy?

Larger planting pots can take a lot of heavy soil and when you add in the weight of the plant and water you could amount to a back breaking load. By simply filling the lower third of the pot with standard foam packing peanuts this will greatly reduce the overall weight without adversely affecting the growing ability of the plant. Always place some gardening fabric between the packing foam and the composite/earth mix.

Getting your new plants home safely!

We all know what happens when we put our newly purchased plants into the back of the car. By the time we get home many will have fallen over and been damaged. To avoid this simply put a layer or tarp or plastic down in the boot along with a small 3 step ladder. Then when you get the plants to your car pop them into the individual slots between the steps. This will keep them upright for the journey home.

Protect your garden from an aggressive plant

There are many plants which if left to their own devices would happily take over. Halting this once it has started can be difficult and sometime impossible without killing the plant. A great way to counter this is to plant it using a standard large planting container. Simply put the plant into the container and cut the base from the bottom. Then dig out the correct sized hole and bed the plant into it. With the base of the container remover the plant’s roots expand as required but only directly down into the soil. The sides of the container will also restrict new sprouts from expanding sideways.

Effective Fence Posts

Instead of cutting the fence post off level at the top it is better to cut at a 45 degree angle. When the post is installed with the angle on top it will allow the posts to weather a lot longer as the rain will run off it quicker. It will also make the fence more secure, as it reduces the ability of people to climb over the sharp edges.
